Why callings stall — and the five hand-offs where it happens

Ask any stake clerk where callings go to die and you'll hear the same answer: nowhere dramatic. Nobody refuses. Nothing breaks. The calling just… waits. A calling rarely stalls because someone said no — it stalls between people, at the hand-offs, where one leader has finished their part and the next one doesn't know it's their turn.

The five hand-offs

• Recommendation → presidency review. A name comes up in council, someone writes it down, and the note lives in a notebook until the next meeting — or doesn't.
• Approval → the interview. The presidency approves; now someone must schedule the visit. If the executive secretary never hears about the approval, the interview never gets on the calendar.
• The high council vote. Twelve busy men, one item, no deadline. Nine have answered; who are the other three? Nobody knows without asking all twelve.
• Sustaining → setting apart. The most common stall of all. The congregation raises their hands, everyone relaxes — and three Sundays later the person still hasn't been set apart, because “sustained” feels finished and isn't.
• Setting apart → recording. The ordinance happened; the record didn't. The clerk who would have recorded it was in another meeting when it happened.

What actually fixes it

Not effort — everyone involved is already faithful and busy. What fixes a hand-off is the same thing in every case: the moment one step finishes, the person who owns the next step is told, by name, what they specifically need to do. A spreadsheet can't do that; it stores what you type and reminds no one.
